2016 Trunk or Treat
On Monday, October 31st, 2016, The Near West Side Partners, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, and Safe and Sound partnered to offer Trunk or Treat. Trunk or Treat was a safe and contained variation on the trick or treat tradition aimed towards the families in the Near West Side. Rather than going door to door, children and their parents visit each vehicle where volunteers had the opportunity to connect with them by passing out candy and promotional materials or items. The event was located at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
Three years ago, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church started this event and it has grown significantly – from 191 the first year to more than 436 this year! This year was the first year that the kids were able to go from trunk to trunk due to poor weather the first two years.
In addition to trick or treating, families were able to participate in many other free activities, including face painting, “Day of the Dead” skull decorating, pumpkin painting, a photo booth, and a story corner.
All of this would not have been possible without our great team which included Penny, Darren, and Gail from Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, as well as Darrian from the Near West Side Partners and Afeni from Safe and Sound. We were lucky enough to have 15 volunteer partners from the Near West Side neighborhood with their trunks decorated for the event.

Aside from these volunteers, we also had many donations of candy, money, and various items to make this
event run smoothly. Pastor Keen from Our Savior’s Lutheran Church was an immense help and we would have
not had the success we did if it wasn’t for him. We would also like to thank the many residents that came out. This event was a huge success and we hope to have another event like this one next year.
