Faith and Community -The Big Red Church
The arts, spiritual space, community events, and an open door is why Presbyterian Calvary Church, aka The Big Red Church, continues to grow with a 150 year anniversary of it’s founding on the horizon in 2019. Pastor Mark has been serving the church and it’s community for 16 years. Kindly labeled “our lady of the interstate”, the church has survived many changes never envisioned by its founding members in 1870.
The Big Red Church has grown to 50 parishioners, many with children, from all parts of the greater Milwaukee area. You will find the renovated interiors in beautiful condition, and a welcoming, flexible open space that serves several congregations. Each service or event hosted by Calvary culminates in fellowship and a snack or meal to bring the group together. The building also has a in-laid labyrinth floor, a small chapel to reflect and pray, arts and community events to draw in a larger community . Not sure what Taizé and Centering Prayer are? Be sure to explore Pastor Mark’s sparkling gem of a church with so much more than meets the eye from the outside. Check the calendar on the website, www.thebigredchurch.com, for a schedule of services for partner congregation Immanuel Church, weekly Eucharist, the Center for Christian Contemplation and other community events.
The Big Red Church is also home to the non-profit, In Tandem Theater Company. For 7 years the theater has been a catalyst for change and a harmonious partnership. With an average of 8 shows per year, the lobby is an inviting area to mingle, view curated art for sale, listen to live piano, and enjoy a beverage while sitting across from the fireplace. The Company also participates in fundraising for other nonprofits that are dedicated to providing arts education to students kindergarten through college. The Calvary congregation is in the midst of a capital campaign titled “Say Yes to the Arts, Architecture, and Abundant Life”. The goal is to create a fund for the upkeep of the historical building, including repairs to the steeple and a new roof. The vision is a “green” building, and they are exploring power-generating solar roof shingles, wind turbines, and rooftop gardens.
