Grocery Challenge
On a Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Marquette University's campus residents like Mike and Judy Howden, business owners like Dan Naumann and students like Rafiq packed in a room to discuss the issues of bringing a grocery to the Near West Side.
This event was the kick-off for the Grocery Challenge announced by Mike Lovell, President of Marquette University at his January 2017 university address . Dr. Lovell highlighted the commitment of the anchor institutions and the need from the campus community to make this a reality.
Students, faculty and staff formed teams, explored potential options, and connected with residents. Next steps will include a “speed network” with local experts, and eventually pitching solutions. You can view the presentation here. Areas of focus include:
Food pantry for students
Leverage existing retail space
Small foot print model
Alternative grocery
Food literacy/healthy eating/Policy
In the upcoming months presentations and interviews will be held at the Neighborhood of Neighborhoods resident meeting at Harley-Davidson. There will be additional opportunities to give your input so please sign up for the NWSP e-newsletter and if you have questions email NWSP at outreach@nearwestsidepartners.org.
