Drive Safe and Resident Engagement
Shannon Fasola Mattox, a long-time resident of the Martin Drive neighborhood on the Near West Side of Milwaukee and successful business owner, absolutely loves where she lives. She enjoys the many offerings of the Near West Side with her two children. One of her sons recently graduated from Marquette University High School in 2015 and now attends North Carolina A&T majoring in Industrial Engineering.
Shannon loves the private, “easy-going” and yet close-knit environment that the Martin Drive neighborhood and the Near West Side provides for her, her family and her business. She feels safe and comfortable in and around the area.
Shannon is not only a resident but a business owner. She is the owner of Orange Butterfly, a personal concierge service business that she started about 10 years ago. She acts as an ambassador for the City of Milwaukee, introducing people to the great neighborhoods and assets of the community. Her business takes her around Milwaukee County, the State, and the country.
During her travels, she has seen how reckless driving has become a huge problem. Shannon has also seen the results of unsafe driving in her own neighborhood, witnessing multiple dangerous incidents. In addition, she was personally impacted when her close friend was a victim in an almost fatal car accident due to a reckless driver.
Being the dedicated, goal-oriented person that she is, Shannon decided to take it upon herself to do something that would promote safety for the neighborhood and her fellow residents.
About 4 months ago, Shannon came to Near West Side Partners with an idea to encourage safe driving. Her idea was to design, print and distribute yard signs around the neighborhood warning drivers to slow down and drive safe.
Together with the Director of Near West Side Partners, Keith Stanley, and other team members, they came up with the Drive Safe campaign. The Drive Safe campaign is Shannon’s idea coming to life and is a highlight of an ongoing collaboration between NWSP and the residents that it serves to bring change to the neighborhood.
The Drive Safe campaign will be kickstarted after the Mayor’s Walk on Thursday, June 22nd. Immediately after the Mayor’s Walk, Shannon will join Mayor Tom Barrett and Keith Stanley encouraging drivers to slow down and drive safe.
