Caring for the Soul of a Community During Traumatic Times

When tragedy and violence strike a community it effects everyone, not only the victims. Since fostering a partnership between Milwaukee Police and the Salvation Army in 2015, Pastor Alexis Twito has lived her vocation by accompanying the families and victims of violence in Milwaukee through some of their most challenging moments in life.

Pastor Alexis is the chaplain coordinator for the Salvation Army and the city of Milwaukee, and came into our offices last week to talk about the work she is doing in the Near West Side and greater Milwaukee Area.

Often called in to council families in the most traumatic situations, Pastor Alexis acknowledges that often there is no right thing to say, but that the presence of a chaplain can be a godsend in helping navigate a recent crisis.

Pastor Alexis is a Lutheran minister herself, and she also oversees over 60 other chaplains of thirteen different religious backgrounds as they do work throughout the Milwaukee area. She told us that having such a diverse group of chaplains has been important in making sure they can reach every community that wants and needs their support.

We thank Pastor Alexis for coming in to talk with us, and we thank her for the meaningful work she does in Milwaukee!
