Near West Side Earth Day 2019
The Near West Side was busselling with residents, volunteers and artists working to improve the community. Groups like Marquette University, Tripoli Shriners, residents, business leaders and host of many supporters including Kilbourn Supermarket, Family Dollar, Milwaukee Food Market, Grifols Plasma and, Mr. Kamal Singh contributed a successful Earth Day clean-up prior to the snowfall.
Communities like the Hilltoppers near 39h and Mt Vernon, College Court (public housing site at 33rd and Highland) and Historic Concordia worked with volunteers from Marquette University to complete various projects in the Near West Side. Hilltopper residents completed a major clean-up with over 25 bags of trash. Residents also assisted with passing out chips and water while grilling the perfect braut over the grill.
Marquette University students under the leadership of Britney Roberson, NWSP Choice Neighborhood Initiative planning coordinator, worked to complete project at College Court like cleaning windows, furniture and much more.
One of the larger undertakings of the day was the installation of the 26th Street Mural Project with over 1500 uniquely designed tile by Near West Side residents and employees. Led by Dr. Lora Gramling and her students these tiles were installed by residents and volunteers along the chain link fence of the former Wisconsin Avenue school. Check out the video on the project.
What a great day to be in the Near West Side for Earth Day 2019!
