Wins for Near West Side BID 10

Near West Side Business Improvement District #10 (BID 10) was established in 1993 making the BID 27 years old. The BID since 2015 has doubled in growth and size.

As we start the new year, here are some of the major accomplishments for BID 10.

Streetscaping

BID 10 was approved by the Community, Economic Development Committee of the City of Milwaukee's Common Council to move forward with the Near West Side streetscaping plan. Elements of this plan includes signage and branding, traffic calming and security cameras at major intersections in the Near West Side.

Ald. Bauman led the efforts working with the City on incorporating "Complete Streets" design principles in the design and residents priorities. The project with support of the Common Council and Department of Public Works is tentatively set to begin in late spring of this year with support from Chad Schultz and his team from Innovative Signs. Design support came from Quorum Architects.

Planters and I94 Clean-up

Near 33rd and McKinley several overgrown planters set through out the year without being maintained. BID 10 working with the Department of Public Works moved three of these planters and added them to the exit ramp of west bound I94. RPM, a local outfit that hires locally and has assisted with BID 10 sponsored clean-ups, removed the trash and overgrown weeds around the area and installed evergreen branches to improve aesthetics.

In addition to cleaning up the planters, RPM cleaned up the exit ramp removing several large loads of trash from a stretch that extended over two city blocks. Large boxes, tires and even furniture was removed and sent to the City of Milwaukee Waste Dump.

Graffiti

The Near West Side combats graffiti every year and each year the staff works closely with Herlyn Roberson of the City of Milwaukee's Department of Neighborhood Services to clean it up immediately. The BID shares the cost with the City and has been instrumental in keeping the neighborhood clean and free from graffiti.

BID 10 will continue to work with the local community to improve business conditions in addition to providing opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship in the years to come.
